Study Guide

17. What happens during Transcription?

The enzyme, RNA polymerase, attaches to one strand of DNA, opens the strand of DNA, and copies it to make mRNA.

18. Why does this process take place?

This takes place because the DNA is incapable of exiting the nucleus, so in transcription, mRNA is made to code a genetic message and to carry it to the ribosome for translation.

19. What is the purpose of copying DNA?

DNA serves as a template for copying and also because it contains the necessary genetic information required to produce polypeptides and proteins in protein synthesis that make up the structures and perform the activities of cells.

20. Where does mRNA travel to?

The mRNA travels to the ribosome.
